Healthy Homemade School Snacks

One of my goals to becoming a better home-maker is to make homemade snacks for my eldest son to take to school. He is 5 years old and in grade R (the year before first grade) and at a great school that offers hot breakfast and lunch. We only have to supply a snack. Usually I send a yogurt and cheddar biscuits (a bag of small savory biscuits) and I have basically been doing this for the 3 years he has been there. Now I wanted a healthier alternative. So yesterday I got into the kitchen and made 4 snack options for school that will go into the freezer and he will choose one each night to get defrosted for school the next day.

For my first batch of snacks I made mini ham and veg bakes, mini pizzas, pizza rolls, and macaroni slices.

Next step is to get the homemade yogurt right....

  1. I have a son in prep here in Australia. I think that is the same year level. My kids often take home cooked meals to school but some days it's boring old sandwiches. I enjoy giving them meals I'm proud of. Over from Eco footprints, nice to meet you.

    1. So good to meet you Linda. I know exactly what you mean, and it feels great to know you giving them a healthier option. Nothing wrong with sandwiches every now and again, we just do the best we can :)

  2. Hello Crystal - I'm also here from EcoFootprints, and I wish someone would make such nice lunch treats for me! :)
What is a macaroni slice? (Sorry - I'm in the US and this is a new term for me.)

  3. Hi Quinn and welcome. The "macaroni slice" is a name I gave it. It is very simple, just cooked macaroni pasta mixed with ham, corn, grated zucchini, cheese (basically anything you like) and some flour. Then beat up some eggs, pour them over and bake till its set. Cut up into slices and serve. Most of mine went into the deep freeze.
